Simon Pagenaud's fifth-place finish last Saturday at Iowa Speedway was a great result, but his car's failure of post-race technical inspection has drawn a $5,000 fine for his Schmidt-Hamilton Motorsports team.
According to INDYCAR, SHM's No. 77 entry (which is driven by Pagenaud) was tagged because its fuel cell was not compliant with Rule 14.7.2 of the IZOD IndyCar Series rulebook, which states that fuel cells have a maximum capacity of 18.5 gallons.
INDYCAR has ruled that the discrepancy in the fuel cell's size had no impact on Pagenaud's Top-5 finish. The Frenchman started last in the field at Iowa -- 25th place -- after being assessed a 10-spot grid penalty for his team's decision to change engines the day before the race.
